Morse Earns Full Ride

James Morse, who starred for Thornton Academy in Maine, has accepted a full scholarship offer from division II Pheiffer University in North Carolina.

One of the best players in the state of Maine is heading to college in North Carolina…for free. 

Thornton Academy’s James Morse has accepted a full athletic scholarship offer from Pheiffer University in North Carolina. 

“They were one of the first couple of schools to contact me,” Morse told the New England Recruiting Report.  “One of their assistant coaches [Jeremy Currier] is from New Hampshire, so when he called me last summer he said that he had heard about me and would be coming to see me at [AAU] nationals in Orlando.” 

Morse didn’t disappoint upon reaching Orlando as his performance was enough to warrant interest from other scholarship level schools including Bentley and New Hampshire.  Later in the year St. Anselm’s, Adelphi, Franklin Pierce, and the University of Maine expressed interest as well. 

“In the end I really narrowed it down to Pfeiffer and St. Anselm’s.  In the spring I visited both campuses and worked out with both teams…” Morse said.  “It was a really hard decision because I really liked everything about the program at St. Anselm’s.  But I was very comfortable with Coach Currier and the rest of the coaching staff at Pheiffer and I’ve always wanted to go down south because I hate the cold winters up north.” 

Morse made a verbal commitment to the coaching staff at Pheiffer last weekend. 

Ultimately, Morse’s scholarship is the result of long hours of hard work and a very high understanding of the game.  Those factors also led to a long list of accolades during his high school career including a spot on Maine’s All-State team as well as being one of three finalists for Maine’s Mr. Basketball award this season. 

“He’s a special player and a solid young man,” said MB Nation head coach Mike Woodbury.  “He isn’t super athletic but his ability to make his teammates better puts him above many of his peers.  He spends hours on the court working on his game and is a pure winner.” 

With that recipe in mind, you can bet Morse is in store for more success at the next level.
