Maine Lands Local Prep Standout

The Black Bears continue to dominate their backyard when it comes to recruiting, as they have received a verbal commitment from one of the state’s top prep schools.

Maine Head Coach Ted Woodward has made it apparent that keeping his state’s top players close to home is one of his top priorities.  He has done a terrific job of that as this year’s roster featured 10 players with ties to the state.  To take it one step farther, all but 2 played either their high school or prep school basketball in New England. 

His most recent addition is Svetoslav Chetinov, a 6’9” center who is currently attending MCI (Maine Central Institute).  The Bulgarian native spent the majority of the season as the starting five-man for Head Coach Dave Campbell’s club. 

MCI utilized a Princeton style offense which dictated that Chetinov spend the majority of his time at the high post.  And while the big man had no problem handling and passing the ball within the offense, as well as making an open shot from as deep as 15 feet, he also has the size and physical strength to be productive in the post.  In fact, while many freshman big men have a hard time adjusted to the physicality of the division I level, that shouldn’t be the case for Chetinov.  With his big and strong body he should be physically prepared to step right in and provided some minutes up front. 

Chetinov joins another NEPSAC product, Gerald McLemore, in the Black Bear’s recruiting class.  You may recall that McLemore enrolled at Maine for the second semester after playing the first semester at Worcester Academy.  Chetinov and McLemore will both be making their college debuts next season.
