Costello Shines at BasketBull Columbus Day Challenge

October 15th, 2009
NERR Junior Elite Division

Here's a look at how one 8th grader did at last weekend's Hall of Fame Columbus Day Challenge.

Eighth grade shooting guard Matt Costello from Lynnfield opened up the tournament in Springfield, Mass with a strong 38 point performance against South County Basketball Club. Overall, he averaged 24 points per game over the weekend tournament and was responsible for approximately 50% of his team's offensive production.

Costello followed up his opening performance with 15 points against Team Scan out of New York City, and finished his tournament play with 20 points against the U14 Columbus Day Challenge tournament winner Team Underrated also out of New York.

Matt scored the basketball in a number of ways over the weekend. One of the coaches observing his play said, "Costello can handle the ball. He can shoot long and midrange, drive to the rack, and finish with either hand. He's a big, strong guard with a comprehensive offensive package."

A Massachusetts resident, Matt was offered the opportunity at the tournament by an AAU director in attendance to play in New York City during the remaining of the Fall season, and compete against some of the best players in the New York metro area. Matt will be heading down to the Big Apple on weekends to play, with the hope of making it to Madison Square Garden for the tournament finals.
